I’ve been working out the terms to a corporate partnership with 24Hour Fitness to get my employees a free gym membership because they’re awesome. Everything is finalized as of today, but the account manager at 24 wants to set up a webex conference call. For just the two of us. Why not just do a normal phone call so I don’t have to download an app, sign in, mess with an unfamiliar interface, etc. It's literally just an audio connection. What am I missing here?

I bet it’s a convenience thing on their end. Every company seems to have a preferred telecom method and they can’t even set up a conference call in a meeting room if it’s not supported.
Bad habits, is my supposition.

Probably just easier for them. They can keep track, use their corporate number, tie it to their calendar, etc. There should be a regular phone number you can dial into without downloading anything.

she thinks you sound cute and wants confirmation?

I’d insist on using whatever method I preferred, even if the ink is dry.

I would do, “just call me on my mobile”.

If they sent you a webex meeting invite, I believe it should also give you a call- in number and I D pin and you can just call from your phone like normal.
No need for the app.

Why not email? I fucking hate conference calls, especially when they're not needed.

Good to know, I'll try that next time

Tell her it’s Friday, and she should meet you for a beer at your favorite tavern instead.
Nobody should have to do conference calls on Friday.

You know, I’ve done that with applicants and it has been a pretty great way to win them over getting a meal and drink , but I’ve yet to have the confidence to try it out on a prospective business partner...

That’s a power move. Do it.

He wants to look at you so he can give you unsollicited advice about what to do with your body in terms of workouts and fitness.

Keeps it casual. Also, if she says yes, it assures you that she isn’t too uptight about fitness and taking it too seriously. :)
To be clear, I’m not suggesting turning a business relationship into a personal one. Just turning a boring meeting into a chance to get a good brew on a Friday when you need it.

Yeah, I just hate it when people try to schedule meetings and whatnot which only really decreases productivity.

Trying to add it to her resume, gets points for people she connects to the app, thinks it is the most awesome thing and wants more people to use it. It could be something as benign as being able to record the call to prove what was said or reference it for putting together the package.

I had to use that the first time today as well. A conference call would have been far easier and more efficient.
And an email even moreso :/

Hey hold on a second.... Did you sell me a corporate gym membership?
My dream job is a floating position that has free reign to go through every department, identifying efficiency issues and fixing them. I feel your pain

All very possible. I’m feeling inundated with workplace apps and programs at the moment, and there are days when I miss the barely-legible handscribbled notes from days past

Good fucking l ord, wouldn’t that be a dream gig? I honestly work at like 50% with all the non value add time wasting I have to put up with .
